Drawdown in Afghanistan.

The US government has begun its gradual military drawdown in Afghanistan, bringing to an end
combat operations there nearly 13 years after al-Qaeda’s strike against the US on 9/11. As the US prepares to
leave the security of Afghanistan to its own people, Al Jazeera English has
compiled exclusive video and photo essays from the years running up to its withdrawal.

Afghanistan At Work - Intro →

The West has poured billions of dollars into Afghanistan, and sacrificed the lives of thousands of soldiers, but to many people back home it’s a confusing, frightening mystery, a place of war, extremism and bitter poverty.

Afghanistan at Work is a documentary project inspired by its predecessor www.kabulatwork.tv which offered a window into the soul of this much-maligned country through the working lives of ordinary people, from a graffiti artist, a gambler to a female MP, Afghan commando, or a beleaguered mayor.

From North to South, East to West, from the remote central highlands to the bustling urban centres, we will be interviewing a complete cross section of Afghan life; the plutocrats, the autocrats, the technocrats, the skilled, the unskilled, the criminal, the saintly, the mystics, the heroes, the campaigners, the good, the bad, the bizarre and the random.

Kabul Blast Picture by @KawoonKhamoosh

[…] it got me to thinking about how weird life in a war zone can be, and how you end up with some truly awful reasons for missing meetings. Those of you who’ve been here know that you end up secretly hoping for an event like this. Not one that hurts anyone, but one that disrupts security just enough to postpone the inevitable misery of another slog through Power Point hell.

Unfortunately, like most car bombs, this one’s killed at least one and injured several more.

So it got me out of a meeting. I wish I felt better about that.

Some reads reflect so well the spirit of life in Kabul as an expat in 2014 that it feel likes writing another blog about it wouldn’t make sense. If you want to know more about my life, have a read.
